Okay, lemme take a stab at this.
First of all, the mushroom-dude functions as a fine umbrella, although whether it's a parasol or a rain-umbrella is an open question.
It's also possible that the mushroom is hallucinogenic, and his purpose in life is to bring the archetypal image of Mr. Easter Island Dude to the consciousness of those who partake of Mr. Mushroom. Of course, that means that the mushroom would be eaten, and that's kind of sad.
Yeah, I'll go with the umbrella hypothesis.
