It's defensive conversation. People don't want to reveal too much about what they really think so they just hide behind clever wordplay and pop culture references. I'm with you it's gross. I used to live near Harvard University and MIT and I was surrounded by 'clever' people who would talk for hours about nothing and have pissing contest conversations all the time. I sympathize it's frustrating.
