You Must Look!!!

It appears that we are going to have to see Sarah Palin in the news every few days for one manufactured reason or another until she is forever vanquished in 2012 after losing the presidential election by a landslide. At least we'll have a month's peace before the world ends on December 21st.

If you're lucky enough to have missed this story, then I apologize for bringing it up. But, it's just so infuriatingly entertaining that I have to mention it.

So, Rahm Emanuel used the word "retarded" in some closed-door meeting at the White House and months later, when the "story" came out, Sarah Palin acted as though she were deeply offended by his use of the word. When Rush Limbaugh used it, however, she wasn't bothered in the least. I'm not sure why I need to care about any of this, but OK, you've got my attention (and, that's what it's all about, isn't it? Getting us to pay attention to you? Any publicity is good publicity, right?) So, it got me thinking about how often "staunch conservatives" decry "political correctness." And, sure enough, when I googled "Palin, political correctness" I found all kinds of stuff about how against "political correctness" she is was. Does her sudden reversal make her a "Flip-Flopper?" Oh, wait, that title only applies to John Kerry. My mistake...How 2004 of me!

So predictable. So hypocritical. So cynical.

It's no wonder that so many of us try to tune the political circus out completely. All this posturing and play-acting is just too painful to endure. I suppose that's why the Supreme Court's ruling on campaign finance of a couple weeks ago, that in effect installs corporate rule and does away with democracy and representative government, caused barely a ripple. Maybe if the Supreme Court had explained that limiting corporate campaign financing retards the efficacy of the political process we would have heard more about it.

Headlight Design

It seems to me that car designers have lost their minds. The shape of headlight housings are getting so ugly and baroque. Whatever happened to "the circle" or even "the ellipse?" Those are viable shapes-- harmonious and balanced when integrated into the overall design of the car. But, nowadays it seems like headlights are supposed to evoke "fierce eyes," or maybe "pizza slices." I think it looks terrible. Oh well.

Time Fungus

One of the most important things about doing a drawing is knowing when to stop.

Anyway, last night, I was thinking about the way age creeps up on us, and first I thought it was like a shadow, like advancing night, but that struck me as totally unoriginal. Then it occurred to me that it was more like a fungus-- creeping up, devouring knees, denuding the scalp...

So, this began as a drawing about that, but, when I got to the point you see it here, I stopped because it's such an ambiguous image. It could be about anything. If I had "finished" it, I would have killed it. I would have narrowed its range of possibilities to one degree.

Juiceman

(February 10th: I couldn't stand having that commercial start playing every time I visited the ol' blog, so I got rid of the video. Here's a nice still to look at instead).

Here's another short (after the commercial, that is) from SpongeBob.nick.com that I got to storyboard-direct. It's called Juiceman. They never tell me when my shorts are going to be online. I've done quite a few of these now, but I haven't seen them all. At least this one's under the "Most Popular" heading... that's gratifying.

The Actor

I've been a little conflicted about this particular post. This is my 666th blog entry, and I thought I should do something BEASTY in order to mark the occasion. I started doing a drawing of Pat Robertson as the devil because he made that appalling comment about the earthquake in Haiti last week. But, I also had the idea you see here kicking around in my head, so I went with it. It didn't seem as forced. Who knows? There may be some kind of connection that I don't see.

Doubly Obnoxious

I admit it, from time to time I'll make a quick call on my cell phone when I'm grocery shopping. I might ask if we need such-and-such or "What was that thing that you wanted?" or whatever. Always brief, always unobtrusive. That's my way.

I was at a grocery store yesterday, and not only was some woman on her cell phone the entire time she was in the store, she was also on speaker phone. So, I, and anyone else in the vicinity, got to hear BOTH sides of her inane conversation. I don't get it. It isn't as if having it on speaker freed up her hands or anything. She was holding the phone in front of her stupid mouth! How is that any easier than holding it to her ear? Also, since there is a lot of background noise in a grocery store, she often asked the dope she was speaking to to repeat himself!

Does she think she's the star of a television show where the audience (everyone else on earth) needs to hear all of the dialogue in order to follow her story? What the hell?

Angel

I was just doodling. I didn't mean to draw the Annunciation.

Cleverer Still

Conversations like this are grueling-- especially for those within earshot.

Change Mind

Something drastic, yet not too harsh please. Something right for me. There's got to be more to the story...
