Landfill

There were many things I could have told you about today, but I narrowed it down to three:

1. I actually saw that sign about landfills on the side of a garbage truck! Wow, talk about spin! I bet the "wildlife" is very grateful that they now have a gigantic, wretched hellhole to live in: "Thank you humans! We were getting so tired of living in pristine wilderness!"

2. Speaking of wildlife, I saw four raccoons climbing up a tree on my bike ride home tonight.

3. I was making an omelette for dinner, and when I flipped it over superheated butter splashed into my eyes and pretty much all over me. (Maybe it wasn't superheated, but it was hot I tell you!) Anyway, my eyes probably needed a good scalding after having seen that sign equating landfills with wildlife preserves.

Have you actually been out in nature lately? It's pretty lame.

Mmm, landfill.
Our land is filled, our seas are filled, tiny islands in the middle of the pacific ocean are filled, our skies are filled, our minds are filled....twinkies are filled, some donuts are filled.....

Mmm, pass the butter please.

Don't worry about the filthy landfill wilderness, because raccoons wash everything they eat.

On the topic of weird random things you see, not long ago I was eating lunch at an outdoor cafe in the village and they have puny little trees in holes dug out of the concrete. I was eating my sandwich, minding my own business, in the middle of a busy thoroughfare when BAM!!! a little sparrow erupted into a puff of feathers, the hawk got his balance with the little creature still clutched in one...hand? paw? foot? claw?...then flew off with his own lunch still squirming. It was real quite for a minute, then a couple of kids started cry. Poor city kids...it was probably the first time they'd seen nature at work and they were horrified. I was sad for the little sparrow, but considered the hawk pretty ballsy. I snickered at the kids then remembered I had my name tag on and straightened up.

Hey, funny you should write about the landfills. It's where I live and I find it rather enjoyable... kidding. I sent you an email about my recent environmental experience. Much more long winded than yours (my dissertation chair says I "lack the law of parsimony" like, whatever!) I hope your eyes live to see another day and entertain your adoring masses with more environmental blather.
