Now What?

I was under the impression that I would be able to run again after these surgeries. I found out today that I can't. At least, I shouldn't unless I want to develop arthritis in the near future.

I'm depressed.

Swim, crawl, roll, tumble......that's what!

I have to agree with Miss Spotbottom. I recommend to my patients all the time to avoid running due to the stress it causes on joints (not the smoking variety) and instead focus on biking, swimming, elliptical trainers and especially yoga. Maybe not as exciting for all those runners out there but still being able to keep the cardio going is very important. Above all, DON'T GET FAT!! Sorry for your loss though. I don't know what I would do if I couldn't bike.

Peace,

Matt

Someone has to say it... smoke cigarettes, eat a lot of fried foods, starch, fast food, ice cream, drink beer, then sit around all day.

Like I said... just say it - don't do it.

I'm the last person who should be giving advice on health, but I was a runner too once upon a time. Nothing flashy, just 2 or 3 miles a couple of times a week. I was not a fast runner...my 5K's were consistently in the upper to mid 30s (minutes, that is). I loved it, craved it, and now, miss it. I won't ever be able to do it again even if I lost the weight. I have a recumbant bike at home to dry my laundry but will soon be putting it back to use as nature intended :)
Don't give up though, look around for something different with similar "runner's high" benefits. If I knew exactly what that would be for you I'd share because I loved running too, but I don't know...
sorry KP :(

That's so awful, man! I'm really, really sorry. I know what a good outlet runnin' is, so I can definitely empathize with the degree of suckage you're experiencing right now.

say it aint so! but can you still ride a bike?? thats not as much pressure on your joints is it? like running can fuck up your ankles and knees because you are stomping on concrete, but bikes its smooth sailing, rotation (unless you are biking in the hills on high gears or something)

dude. i hope you can still bike at least.

I can bike. It's not the same, though. At least I got one marathon in before the axe fell.
